Little Women 2019 | PG | Watch on DVD, Hulu, Sling TV, and many other subscription services
Little Women (2019), directed by Greta Gerwig, offers a fresh retelling of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel, following the lives of the four March sisters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy - as they grow up in post–Civil War America. Blending past and present timelines (it can be confusing to keep track of which is which!), the film explores themes of ambition, family, love, and independence through each sister’s unique journey. There are stronger themes of feminism in this particular adaptation, and many viewers (including myself) were unhappy with the unfaithfulness to the book, especially in consideration of the portrayal of the characters. For instance, Jo’s love story with Friedrich Bhear is treated as a compromise made to satisfy Alcott’s readers, and the sisters themselves are wild and occasionally obnoxious (I suspect Greta Gerwig was aiming for a “free spirited” portrayal of the family, but it came across to me as unruly and loud). But enough of my complaints… if you are able to overlook the deficiencies, this is an unique and touching rendition of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel. For more adaptations of Little Women, please refer to the 2017 version above, or check out my Preteen Girls Historical Movies list. CONTENT GUIDE: Kids-in-Mind and Plugged In

Based on the stories by Elizabeth Gaskell, this delightful miniseries portrays life in a small English town in the 1840s, where a close-knit community of women navigate tradition and change as the coming railway threatens their way of life. Amid moments of humor and heartbreak, tender romances quietly unfold, revealing love in its many forms - young and hopeful, lost and rekindled, and often touched by the constraints of class and circumstance. This miniseries is one of my very, very favorites, and my family has watched it countless times together, and is quoted as often as possible! I’d also like to clarify that the movie image above makes it seem like the characters are comprised almost entirely of old ladies, which may not initially interest your teen daughters... While there is a gaggle of lovely dear old ladies, there are some young ones as well! Your teens will love Sophy Hutton and Jessie Brown, both young ladies with happy endings. CONTENT GUIDE: IMDb
