About Me
Welcome to Homeschooling with Period Dramas!
Hello everyone! I’m Anna - former librarian, homeschool graduate, and lifelong lover of classic literature.
Homeschooling with Period Dramas is newly launched (as of March 2025), and I’m so excited to share upcoming content with you!
This blog is where my love of homeschooling, history, and period dramas come together. I share family-friendly historical movies, movies to supplement history studies, seasonal period drama recommendations, Charlotte Mason Books-to-Movies, and all the best audiobooks and radio dramas. My goal is to help families find meaningful stories that bring the past to life.

why period dramas can be a valuable (and fun!) homeschooling tool
Period dramas and historical movies are an effective way to bring literature and history to life in a way that textbooks often fall short. Additionally, many children are visual learners, and I know from my own personal homeschooling experience that being able to see and witness historical events, customs, and adaptations of classic literature helped to strengthen my understanding and appreciation of literature and history.
During my homeschool days, I so enjoyed watching the film adaptations of my favorite books - some of my favorites were (and still are!) Pride and Prejudice (1995), Little Women (1994), Anne of Green Gables (1985), and The Chronicles of Narnia BBC TV series.
Charlotte mason Philosophy
Charlotte Mason’s philosophy emphasizes the use of living books - rich, well-written stories that engage the imagination and nourish the mind. In the same way, period dramas, when carefully chosen, can serve as living movies - immersive, story-driven experiences that make history and literature come alive.
These films and series can deepen a student's understanding of history and literature, and also reinforce lessons learned through reading. When approached with discernment, period dramas and historical movies can complement a Charlotte Mason-inspired education - with a bonus: they’re fun!
Conservative biblical values
With a foundation in conservative biblical values, I approach every movie review with careful discernment, with the goal of assisting parents to find enriching and wholesome entertainment that aligns with their values. I carefully provide links to thorough content guides for as many period dramas as I can (when I am unable to find content guides to share I do my best to provide my own insights), so parents can confidently choose media that reflects their own family’s values and principles.
I understand how challenging it can be to find safe and suitable movies for your children, especially in this time and age! My desire is to make that process easier by offering period dramas that you can trust, though all with the understanding that every family’s values are different! What may be perfect for my family may not be perfect for yours (and vice versa). If you ever have any questions, or would like more information about a particular movie, please feel free to reach out to me here! I’d love to hear from you!
Thank you
I’m thrilled to embark on this journey with you and can’t wait to share my love of period dramas, classic literature, and homeschooling! Whether you’re a homeschooling parent, period drama enthusiast, or simply someone who loves a good story, I hope you’ll find inspiration and helpful insights here.
